Hello & welcome to Depth Writing With Dr Rachel

About me.

I’m a Jungian-based writer & teacher living in a small former mill town nestled amid the West Yorkshire moors. In former lives I’ve been a journalist, an editor of the arts & culture magazine Dazed & Confused and a lecturer in journalism, fashion, critical & contextual studies and creative writing. I’ve since gone rogue from academia to become an independent teacher and writer. In my present life I run a programme of depth-writing workshops, courses and retreats grounded in Jungian psychoanalysis focused on working with writing & imagination to support transformational growth. I’m an HEA Associate, a member of the London Arts Based Research Centre Editorial Board and a co-Editor of forthcoming Routledge publication The Creative Psyche: Between Spirit & Matter. And, as you’ve probably guessed, I love to dive deep.

What is depth writing?

Depth writing is a holistic practice that evolved from my deep dives into the inner world of the unconscious while under taking a PhD in applying Jungian psychoanalysis to creative writing. It’s a journey that began way back through a life-changing encounter with Jungian psychoanalysis in the midst of a mid-life breakdown and one that continues to take me deeper and further into the invisible matrix of a larger healing reality that has made my life immeasurably richer and fuller.

The first-Friday dispatches.

By becoming a subscriber to Depth Writing With Dr Rachel, you will receive a dispatch from my ongoing travels between worlds via the arts, literature, culture, nature, spirituality & all things Jungian, written from the heart to feed your head on the first Friday of every month. It’s a joy for me to share my passion so I’ve made it free for anyone to subscribe. However, if you’d like to support my work as an independent writer & teacher, you can become a paid subscriber for the price of a monthly coffee. Paid subscribers are rewarded with free access to the mid-month Monday depth writing pods, which are a chance to write, reflect and connect with others in a friendly, supportive online space (see below).

The travel kit.

At the end of each first-Friday dispatch you’ll find writing prompts to help you explore your own depths. The best way to approach the prompts is as a ‘naturalist’ conducting an experiment, keeping a curious, open and compassionate mind. Although depth writing is therapeutic, it’s not therapy so let the words lead but only as far as you want to go. You can do the prompts on your own or with a friend. Or you can join the mid-month Monday depth writing pods to do the prompts with others.

The mid-month Monday pods.

Each month you will have a chance to join the mid-month Monday depth writing pod, 7pm-8.15pm GMT. The mid-month Monday pods are a chance to have time just for yourself away from the busyness of life to do the monthly writing prompts together with others in a friendly & supportive online space. Access to the mid-month Monday pods is free to paid subscribers. Free subscribers are very welcome too and can join via the booking system in the first-Friday dispatches.

Workshops, courses & retreats.

I run a programme of in person & online depth writing workshops, courses & retreats throughout the year. By subscribing to Depth Writing With Dr Rachel, you will also receive the latest news and updates about these.
